Much of the suburban land we inhabit in WA was once wetlands teeming with life. Tiny pockets of these ecosystems remain, a small window into what once was. As a city dweller I seek out the company of trees in pockets of remnant bush close to where I live. Time spent immersed in the quietness of nearby paperbark swamps led to the creation of these paintings. Multiple visits with my sketchbook enabled me to depict several vantage points, painting that which resonated most strongly in my memory. The riot of tangled branches and grasses encouraged a play of brush work and sgraffito whilst sky and water led to quieter passages of paint providing breathing spaces amongst the chaos.
